A quick update on GNOME3 live USB.
I just pushed release 0.0.6, because the two previous releases (0.0.4 and 0.0.5) were no longer using Cantarell font by default and William spotted the error yesterday.
Main change : Cantarell font is now used for applications and GNOME Shell (and I also added yelp and more translations for some packages).

Unfortunately, this new version doesn't work on computers with Intel i915 cards/chipsets. The previous one did.
ReplyDeleteWhich release was working ? 0.0.5 or 0.0.4 ?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't boot as well, both in my netbook and my desktop, both with intel graphics...
ReplyDeleteHmm, it could be caused by switch from kernek 2.6.37 to 2.6.37.2
ReplyDeleteFirst impression of GNOME 3? It sucks. I'm open to change and some of it looks interesting, but on the whole, it's an obfuscated pile of dung. It's completely unintuitive - what does one do with it? Oh, found apps, now what? I want to change my font sizes - can't do that anymore. There's no clear way of doing most trivial tasks. Adding something to favorites on the left? Forget it. Adding a shortcut to the apps? Ya, right. Revealing the old desktop, which was a good workspace for current projects? No way. Get pissed off and want to go back to the old way? Search Google, cuz GNOME isn't going to help. It's been made so simple that not even tips, tutorials or help are available. "Gee, this is easy, I've been developing it for months, how come you can't figure it out? Are you stupid?"
ReplyDeleteI started with KDE when it was first released - before GNOME even existed. I immediately switched to GNOME when it came out. I never thought I'd say this, but KDE is now looking like the better option.
Erick, I'm sorry but this is not the best place to share your experiences with the GNOME Shell.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the fixed font size is a known bug, to be fixed before the release: http://blogs.gnome.org/aklapper/2011/03/04/gnome-3-0-blocker-bugs-status/
Leonardo, I believe it is as good as any - might save some folks the time I wasted downloading it and trying it out. Spare them the disappointment. Some may like the shell, but it's way too immature to be the default.
ReplyDeleteOh, the link - that just talks about the font following the universal setting. How would one get to that universal setting in the shell? Use the terminal? No thanks. What happened to the old font applet? Bah.
Any way to test the image in a virtual machine? Vmware? VirtualBox? Anything else?

ReplyDeleteCongrats, Frederic. You've got (yet another?) a share of "hate mail" on GNOME Shell. If only people would come back for "love mail" after the release...
ReplyDeleteThanks Leonardo, I've started moderating such content and I won't allow similar stuff in comments anymore. If people want to shout, it won't be on my blog.
ReplyDeleteit was not hate, it was my opinion. Thank you for Deleting my DEEP thoughs, it demonstrate well how unopen you are to cristicism. for resuming in non flaming version what my opinion was. i'm not about to adopte gnome shell as soon cause i want my computer to look like a computer and not like a cell phone thingy. but like you are unopne to cristiscism you are about to delete that message aswell aren't you?

ReplyDeleteThese blog posts are about Live image itself and not GNOME3 in general. I'm open to critisim about my own work on my own blog.
ReplyDeleteYou are free to express your opinions about GNOME-Shell, but doing it here won't get you anywhere.
Opening a blog is quite easy these days..
Opening a blog may be quite easy these days, but it wont get my anywhere more than here, and whatever i don't feel like opening a blog then never posts again on it. By the way, if you read my post on the new image thread you will understand why i'm sometime like that.
