GNOME 3 Live image 0.1.0 released - Geeko strikes back

Another week, another release.

This week has been a busy week : GNOME people worked really hard on 2.91.91 release and openSUSE people worked really hard on release openSUSE 11.4.

So, let's please everybody with this week GNOME 3 Live image 0.1.0 : it features GNOME 2.91.91 on top of the brand new openSUSE 11.4.

If you tested previous live image, you'll notice a lot of changes, so don't be surprised :
- image is no longer persistent when installed on USB stick : it was slowly first boot a lot (and we don't want to give people testing the image it is slowww) and sometime, if shutdown wasn't done properly, the persistent partition could become corrupted and you had to either remove it completely or redump the key
- language / keyboard / timezone selection at startup is gone : again, it was slowing the boot and the experience was completely different from GNOME3 experience. But you can still choose the language (as well as keyboard / timezone) : either in the boot menu at startup or later, in GNOME Control Center (in GNOME Shell, top right menu then System Settings and Regions / Language)
- no more password for demo user (named 'tux' ) nor root user : again, simplicity prevaled. If you get asked a password at any time, just press enter.
- virtualbox guest support is not available (temporary issue for this image and we still don't support GNOME Shell in virtualbox)
- a lot of translations have been added
- many GNOME packages have been ported to GNOME 3 platform and are preinstalled in the image
- since we rebased the image on openSUSE 11.4, we will try to stick to kernel and X11 drivers shipped with it.

As always, you'll find the image at http://gnome3.org/tryit.html

Enjoy.

(Yes, I know above photo isn't a gecko but I only had iguane in my photo albums :)

  3. Great, I'm gonna test it ASAP.

    I'm starting to like Shell.

Unity and Shell are both the future, don't be surprised if the other two OSs start borrowing ideas from these awesome Shells! :P

  4. Thanks! I find myself installing this 'special' openSUSE 11.4, if you can call it that - instead of the brand-new regular openSUSE; just because of the newest GNOME 3 and its beautiful sleekness.

If other people do as I do, perhaps you should correct some minor shortcomings that I want to list:

    - you mix openSUSE 11.4 and 11.3 repositories (I guess you forgot to remove the 11.3 ones)
    - openSUSE firewall is not installed/activated
    - apparmor neither
    - using preload (and preload-kmp) would make booting MUCH quicker

For me, GNOME OS has arrived early, through your ISOs. ;-)

  5. @chris thanks for your comments :
    - mixed repositories is my fault : I fixed the repositories used to generated the image but not the files inside the images when it is running. Will be fixed in next release
    - I disabled / uninstalled firewall in 0.1.0 since the image was no longer persistent (and it was slowing the boot). I'll add it back in the image, disabled when running as live image but enabled when installed on a system
    -same for apparmor
-same for preload (I wanted to try to use systemd but kiwi doesn't like it).

    Thanks for your comments

  6. Tried the 0.1.0 CD, but always fails booting with a boot error message complaining about the mbrid value.

Tried downloading the CD again and tried different ways of copying the ISO onto my USB keys (the script on the gnome3 site, plain dd and so on) always with the same result.

  7. Hey, tried running off USB. When connecting to wireless, I created unsafe (empty) password for keyring. It kind of freezes when you do that. [Ctrl + Alt + Backspace] lets you login again, but then nm-applet is gone. Might not be an issue if not running off of USB.
