GNOME3 live image 0.3.1 released

Hello again,
Yak & Yeti logo

I just did a quick update to GNOME 3 live image, to fix some issues people discovered in previous images :

  • radeon / r600g openGL drivers have been switched to use gallium : they should be more stable with GNOME-Shell
  • GNOME Control Center system information correctly detects graphics card on your system
  • Empathy accounts panel is back in GNOME Control Center
As always, you can download it from http://gnome3.org/tryit.html. If you want to install this image on a system, just add "liveinstall" on the boot command line.

Enjoy !

  1. Every time I download one of these images I swear it isn't 24hrs later that you come out with another! I can't keep up!

  2. I quite like the rapid development, however I find that every other release if I select Danish rather than English it will fail on boot.

Regardless I am tempted to install this and simply let PackageKit keep it up to date provided that is possible. Sucking down a fresh image every day seems a bit like wasting the nice OBS peoples bandwidth.

  3. I'm curious how to debug a failure to boot on these. I haven't gotten one to boot yet, though I can boot the Fedora 15 Alpha, say. It's an Intel chipset. I just end up with a totally locked up loading screen after the boot loader, without any progress on the progress bar.

  4. When I logged in I get an error message saying shell failed to load and I get the fallback mode. Probably it don't contain proper drivers for my ati mobility radeon hd 45XX card.

I looked through the control center and other places, no mention of how to download additional drivers. So finally decided to download from the ati site.

When tried to create internet connection, I get an error msg saying I don't have enough privileges.

When I tried to give admin access to the live user or create another user, the msg is click on the unloak button before any changes. But that button remains locked even after clicking multiple times.

Am I being stupid, or is it some kind of joke?

  5. @davidnielsen: I'll check Danish bug

Don't worry for OBS bandwith, we are using download.opensuse.org infrastructure, so mirrors are being used for download, not OBS itself. But of course, you can install the image and then update it

@Richard : you should check the download and the dump to usb key was correct (you can give md5sum to abock dump tool so it checks it is ok). Otherwise, try choosing a "text" video mode in the boot menu.

@vjjustin: it should work, we have r600g gallium driver. please give glxinfo | grep "OpenGL render" output (I changed graphical driver for r600g, it might be related).
This is a Free Software only image : check at http://en.opensuse.org/Fglrx on how to add the driver.
Regarding privileges, I'll double-check next week.

  6. @Fred:
I have an ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470. Same problem as vjjustin. glxinfo says it's "Software Rasterizer". I think it's related with the change for Gallium driver.

  7. @Mathieu: indeed. Could you pastebin your Xorg.log so I'll look at it next week ? (I might have access to a system with recent radeon chipset, not 100% sure)

    Thanks

  8. I have just tested again. glxinfo tells :
    "direct rendering: No"

In Xorg.0.log : "RADEON(0): GPU accel disabled or not working, using shadowfb for KMS"

  9. I did a install of the 0.3.1 release. So far it is running quite well but it seem there is a problem with getting a default keyring generated and unlocked on login. I don't know if this is openSUSE or specific to the GNOME3 image, I recall having the same bug on openSUSE over a year ago but I thought vuntz fixed it.

It would also be neat to get Ubuntu style encrypted home dirs but I will take that to the appropriate openSUSE channels.

  10. I likely find the problem in /var/log/boot.msg :
<6>[ 2.596173] [drm] Loading CEDAR Microcode
    <3>[ 2.600609] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/CEDAR_pfp.bin"
<3>[ 2.600618] [drm:evergreen_startup] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
    <3>[ 2.600627] radeon 0000:01:00.0: disabling GPU acceleration

    Hope it will help.

  11. Frederic,

On my system I still get the fallback mode (M92 RV710/730, the (in)famous HD4570).

Anyway going to install this and deploy fglrx :)

  12. it would greatly benefit openSUSE and thus the liveUSB distro if the following patch was applied to gst-plugins-good.

    http://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst-plugins-good/commit/?id=1e2c1467ae042a3c6bb1a6bc0c07aeff13ec5edb

Doing so prevents highly reproducable crashing when playing back media on a low-end machines such as a netbook.

  13. @Matthieu : thanks, it is helpful, I might find a system to reproduce the issue. It seems to be caused by kiwi stripping firmware from our initrd on the image
@davidnielsen: please fill a bug on bugzilla.novell.com to get gstreamer fixed for openSUSE 11.4. I'll check for the keyring

  14. Mhh, I quite like these. :)

But it frequently crashed on my machine when starting up Firefox from the GNOME Shell (among other things).

Could it be that not having a swap partition has it crashing so often? Or is it just my machine...?
(I have an ASUS eeepc 1201n with the NV ION graphics.)

  15. @mi-au it is hard to tell. Maybe nouveau isn't very stable for your nvidia chipset. You might want to install the image and then add nvidia proprietary driver.
